Discover the Culture and History of Grecìa Salentina on Guided Tours
Itinerary in Grecìa Salentina
Private tour or for organized groups
Tour Description
A tour through the most beautiful villages of Grecìa Salentina, an area in the province of Lecce where “Griko,” or Grecanic, a Greek-derived language from the long Byzantine rule in Salento, is still spoken. In these towns, Greek culture comes alive through songs, music, art, and traditions.
The itinerary includes a visit to the historic center of Corigliano d’Otranto with the Castello de’ Monti, medieval in origin but with a Baroque façade, and the Lucchetti Arch, featuring stories carved in the local stone. The tour also visits Melpignano, home of the traditional ‘Concertone’ in the square of the former Augustinian Convent, the final stage of the itinerant festival Notte della Taranta.
Its historic center boasts the scenic Piazza San Giorgio, enclosed by Renaissance porticoes, and a splendid Palazzo Marchesale.
Other stops on the Grecìa Salentina itinerary include Soleto, seat of the medieval county of the Orsini del Balzo, with the 14th-century Guglia di Raimondello and the Church of Santo Stefano, a true jewel of medieval art; and Carpignano Salentino with the Crypt of Santa Cristina, a church entirely carved into the rock housing some of the oldest signed and dated frescoes in art history (Teofilatto, 959 AD).
