Guided Tours in Acaya
The fortified city of Gian Giacomo
Private tour or organized group tour
Tour Description
Acaya, once known as ancient Segine, is a small jewel of military architecture and urban design.
Its current form dates back to 1535, when Gian Giacomo dell’Acaya , architect and military engineer in the service of Emperor Charles V, redesigned the settlement.
Throughout the Kingdom of Naples, he built numerous fortifications, and in Acaya, the town where he held the title of baron, he finally had the opportunity to realize the Renaissance concept of the “ideal city,” following the principles of fortificazioni alla moderna.
The guided tour leads you through a perfectly preserved fortified village shaped as a square, surrounded by a moat and defensive walls reinforced on three corners by massive bastions; the fourth corner is dominated by the castle.
Inside the walls, along a diagonal leading from the castle, you’ll find the picturesque Piazza Gian Giacomo, marked by the Clock Tower and the church dedicated to Santa Maria ad Nives, as well as the Convent of Sant’Antonio.
This area showcases a layout of remarkable geometric harmony, with streets intersecting at right angles and blocks of equal dimensions.
