A guided tour to discover the history and monuments of Brindisi — the ancient Brundisium.

Brindisi has always been deeply connected to its harbor. According to Strabo, even its name derives from Brunda, which in the Messapian language meant “deer’s horns,” referring to the shape of the natural inlet that defines the port. One of the safest in the Mediterranean, the harbor of Roman Brundisium was a strategic gateway to the East, linked to the capital of the Empire by the Appian Way (Via Appia) and the Trajan Way (Via Traiana). In later centuries, it continued to serve as a key embarkation point for crusaders, leaders, pilgrims, and sailors.

The itinerary begins along the city’s seafront with the Monumental Staircase, crowned by the Roman Column at its top. From here, you can enjoy a panoramic view of the Alfonsino Castle, located at the entrance of the port, and the Italian Sailor’s Monument.

A narrow street leads from the seafront to Cathedral Square (Piazza Duomo), passing under the bell tower of the Cathedral. Overlooking the square is the Archaeological Museum, which houses artifacts illustrating the history of settlements in the area from prehistoric, Messapian, and Roman times, as well as a rich collection of underwater finds recovered from the seabed of Brindisi.

Other remains of the Roman city are preserved in the archaeological area beneath the New Verdi Theatre and inside Palazzo Granafei Nervegna, which displays the original capital of the Roman Column.
