Historical and Archaeological Itinerary in Castrum Minervae
Private tour or for organized groups
Tour Description
An itinerary through ancient Castrum Minervae, recently identified by archaeological research with the location described by Virgil in the third book of the Aeneid.

Follow in the footsteps of Aeneas through a historic center surrounded by medieval walls and protected by a castle, now home to the Archaeological Museum.
At the heart of the old town stands the Norman-era Cathedral (12th century AD), destroyed by the Turks during one of their raids and later rebuilt, preserving only the exterior medieval architectural elements. On one side, it incorporates a Byzantine chapel dating back to the 9th–10th century; only fragments of its rich decorative frescoes have survived.

The ‘Wall Walk’ running parallel to the fortifications allows visitors to observe the physical superimposition of the Aragonese circuit directly over the Messapic walls (4th–3rd century BC).
Near the main gate to the ancient city, excavations have uncovered a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena–Minerva, from which extraordinary finds are displayed in the Castro Archaeological Museum.
Key highlights include: the colossal limestone statue of Athena, over three meters high, which once stood inside the temple; and a 4th-century BC bronze figurine, only 12 cm tall, depicting the same goddess with a Phrygian helmet identifying her as the Phrygian (Trojan) goddess.
