Guided Tours in Grottaglie
Tour of Apulia’s Ceramic Art and Traditions
Private tour or for organized groups
Tour Description
A guided tour of Grottaglie’s historic center, the “City of Ceramics,” hub of an ancient pottery tradition passed down through generations for centuries.

The itinerary begins in the streets and alleys of the Ceramics Quarter, located along the Gravina di San Giorgio, where, since the Middle Ages, artisans carved workshops into the rock to craft ceramics.

In today’s workshops, master ceramists continue to transform the naturally occurring local clay into outstanding examples of local craftsmanship. A visit to a ceramic workshop allows you to observe the various stages of production, from the potter’s wheel to the decoration of pieces in both traditional and modern styles.

In the oldest part of the village, the Castello Episcopio, once the residence of the bishops of Taranto, now houses a museum illustrating Grottaglie’s ceramic history with displays of archaeological finds dating back to the 8th century BC, everyday objects, majolica, nativity scenes, and contemporary ceramics.

The tour continues through the historic center’s palaces, featuring balconies adorned with the typical ‘pumi,’ symbols of good luck and prosperity, and visits to the town’s most beautiful churches.
