Guided Tours in Herculaneum
Itinerary through the Archaeological Park of ancient Herculaneum
Private tour or organized group tour
Tour Description
An itinerary through the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum, where excavations begun in 1738 uncovered the remains of a city whose life was abruptly ended by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.

In ancient Herculaneum, buried under about 20 meters of lava, pyroclastic flows, and volcanic mud, furnishings, everyday objects, and food were extraordinarily preserved. Most of the visitable archaeological park consists of private homes: along the paved streets, between the cardines and decumani of Herculaneum’s urban layout, you’ll find beautiful domus decorated with frescoes and mosaics, where doors and wooden furniture still survive in charred form.
Numerous workshops were also present: the pistrinum (bakery), the caupona (tavern), the gemmarius’ workshop for working precious gemstones, and the thermopolium, where street food was sold.

With the exception of the baths and the gymnasium, much of Herculaneum’s public buildings remain buried, including the Forum area with its sacred and civic structures.

The tour concludes at the ancient beach, where beneath stone arches the skeletons of over three hundred people were found — those who, on the night of the eruption, abandoned their homes in a desperate attempt to reach the sea.
