Guided Tours in Nardò
Tour through Baroque and Rococo Highlights
Private tour or for organized groups
Tour Description
A guided tour exploring the history and monuments of Nardò, the ancient Neretum. A city immersed in elegant Baroque and Rococo atmospheres, where time seems to have stood still.
The itinerary through Nardò’s historic center begins at the Castello degli Acquaviva and continues past a succession of 17th- and 18th-century churches and palaces, leading to the central Piazza Salandra, one of the most beautiful squares in southern Italy. Known as the city’s ‘salotto buono’ (upscale gathering place), it is a popular meeting spot for locals of all ages and is dominated by the Guglia dell’Immacolata, erected by the people of Nardò in gratitude for surviving the 1743 earthquake that shook all of Salento.
Surrounding the square are the 16th-century Palazzo del Sedile, the churches of San Trifone and San Domenico, the Palazzo di Città, and the Fontana del Toro, which reproduces the civic coat of arms.
The tour continues toward the Cathedral, a building of Norman origin with a long history of reconstructions and renovations. Its exterior appearance is the work of Ferdinando Sanfelice, a famous 18th-century Neapolitan architect renowned for the monumental open staircases of Naples’ palaces.
Inside, the decoration is an eclectic mix: from pointed and rounded arches dividing the naves, to medieval frescoes, and richly adorned Baroque altars.
