Tour Description
An itinerary to discover the magnificent “Villa A” of Oplontis, an outstanding example of a Roman aristocratic villa in the modern city of Torre Annunziata.
The building, likely once the residence of Poppea Sabina, the second wife of Emperor Nero, is a luxurious architectural complex built around the mid-1st century BC. Expanded during the Imperial period, it was under restoration at the time of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.
Visiting the so-called Villa of Poppea offers a unique opportunity to admire authentic treasures of Roman art and architecture.
The villa is famous for its exquisite wall frescoes and floor mosaics, remarkably well preserved, the thermal rooms including the calidarium and tepidarium, and the triclinium (dining room), with walls decorated with pictorial images of fig baskets, pomegranates, and sweets typical of the era.
The monumental suburban villa also featured lush gardens and a large 61-meter-long swimming pool, surrounded by colonnades, porticoes, and hospitalia, rooms for guests.
Together with the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the buildings of ancient Oplontis, including ‘Villa B’, once owned by Lucius Crassius Tertius and not yet open to visitors, are included in the UNESCO World Heritage list.
