Guided Tours in Taranto
Exploring the Heart of Magna Graecia
Private or Organized Group Tours
Tour Description
Explore the ancient city of Taras, the “city of two seas,” founded in 706 B.C. by settlers from Sparta.

This itinerary takes you through the heart of what was once the most important city of Magna Graecia. While only a few architectural remains survive from the grand Greek colony, such as the Doric temple columns in the old town or the remnants of an aqueduct along Corso Italia, the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto (MArTA) offers a unique opportunity to rediscover the splendor of ancient Taranto. Its extraordinary collections include ceramics, terracotta figurines, and exquisite jewelry, mainly from the rich Hellenistic necropolises dating from the late 4th century B.C. to the Roman conquest.

The tour continues into the old town, situated on an island and accessible via a stone bridge or the famous Swinging Bridge (Ponte Girevole). Here, you will see the imposing Aragonese Castle, standing proudly beside the navigable canal. Wandering the maze of narrow streets, Via Duomo leads to the historic center and the Cathedral of San Cataldo, one of the oldest Romanesque churches in Puglia. Inside, the Cappellone of San Cataldo shines with its statues, frescoes, and intricate marble inlays.
