Guided Tours in Trani
Trani and the Queen of the Cathedrals of Puglia
Private or Group Tours
Tour Description
A guided tour through the historic center of Trani, overlooking a picturesque harbor filled with fishing boats, not far from which stands the magnificent Cathedral, one of the finest examples of Apulian Romanesque architecture.
The itinerary begins in the area where the Swabian Castle and the Cathedral rise, both built from the city’s characteristic white limestone — a testament to Trani’s medieval splendor.
Dedicated to Saint Nicholas the Pilgrim, the Cathedral was founded in 1097 over an older church. Its Romanesque façade, flanked by a tall bell tower, features an elegant rose window and a series of arches that once framed the bronze door by Barisano da Trani, now preserved inside after restoration. Inside, visitors can admire four distinct levels: the upper church, the lower church dedicated to Santa Maria della Scala, the crypt of Saint Nicholas, and the hypogeum of Saint Leucius.
The tour continues through the narrow alleys of the old town, among ancient churches, noble palaces, and the Giudecca, the former Jewish quarter that once hosted a thriving community centered around four synagogues. After the expulsion of the Jews in the 16th century, these synagogues were converted into churches.
Today, an iron Star of David crowns the small bell gable of the Scolanova Synagogue, while the former Scola Grande, now the Church of Sant’Anna, houses the Jewish Art Section of the Diocesan Museum of Trani.
