Itinerary in Italy’s Easternmost City

Private or Group Tours Available

Tour Description

Embark on a journey to discover Otranto, Italy’s easternmost city, also known as the “Gateway to the East.” Prepare to be amazed by an extraordinary natural setting: in front of the city lies a stunning azure sea, with the mountains of the Albanian coast visible in the distance.

The ancient town is enclosed within 15th-century fortifications. Among the whitewashed walls of old houses, the imposing castle, and the narrow cobblestone streets, you’ll feel immersed in a medieval atmosphere—a timeless beauty that remains untouched.

Our route takes us to one of the city’s highest points to visit the Cathedral, built between 1080 and 1088. This majestic building, with its Romanesque façade dominated by a Renaissance rose window, houses a masterpiece of medieval art: a nearly intact mosaic floor. Commissioned by Archbishop Gionata and created by Pantaleone between 1163 and 1165, their names can still be found within the thousands of colorful tiles. At the center lies the magnificent Tree of Life, surrounded by allegorical figures, mythological characters, and biblical scenes woven into its branches. The Cathedral also preserves a chapel with the remains of the 800 Martyrs, who were beheaded during the Turkish conquest in 1480.

Following the city walls, we reach the Bastions, perched over the sea—offering one of the most stunning panoramic views of Otranto and its harbor. Nestled within this maze of alleyways is another artistic gem of Otranto: the Church of San Pietro, a small Byzantine church (9th-10th century) with a Greek cross plan and three apses. It still preserves part of the splendid frescoes that once entirely covered its walls.
