Guided Tours in Polignano a Mare
Into the Blue – A ‘Volare’ Inspired Tour
Private or Group Tours
Tour Description
A guided tour to discover the historic center of Polignano a Mare, overlooking the deep blue of the Adriatic Sea, where a continuous row of white houses stands atop a dramatic rocky cliff.
Our itinerary begins at the Arco Marchesale, the ancient gateway leading into the heart of the old town: Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, home to the Chiesa Matrice dating back to 1295 and the Palazzo dell’Orologio. From here, the route winds through a maze of narrow alleys lined with small whitewashed houses, opening onto stunning terraces and balconies suspended over the cliffs.
Just outside the old town, the ancient Via Traiana bridge, still walkable today, spans the deep inlet of Lama Monachile. Reaching the pebble beach below is a unique experience — even better when accompanied by the famous “caffè speciale”, a local delight made with coffee, sugar, cream, lemon zest, and amaretto.
The tour ends at the Monument to Domenico Modugno, the beloved singer-songwriter born here, and at the famous “Volare Stairway”, which leads to a panoramic terrace overlooking the sea — the perfect spot to admire Polignano’s breathtaking beauty.
A few kilometers north of town, a small cove along the coast shelters the picturesque fishing village of San Vito, which grew under the shadow of the ancient Benedictine Abbey.
