Guided Tours in Underground Lecce
Itinerary and Tour of the Underground City
Tour Description
A journey through some of the most fascinating underground sites in Lecce, a city that, with its continuous habitation, has witnessed over two millennia of history. An unusual itinerary allowing visitors to explore places where ancient history coexists with the contemporary, and in some cases, even physically overlaps with the city we see today.
This is evident in locations like the region’s largest fortress, the Castle of Charles V, with its prisons beneath the Torre Mozza and the stories of those once held there. The vast underground galleries, originally designed for military purposes by Gian Giacomo dell’Acaya, repurposed the medieval castle’s ancient moat. Over time, these galleries have served as stables, dumps, and during World War II, as an air-raid shelter for soldiers stationed at Caserma Castello.
The tour also includes a visit to a typical historic house in Lecce’s old town, featuring characteristic star-vaulted ceilings. After renovation work, the owners converted it into an archaeological museum, revealing significant artifacts from ancient and medieval periods.
