TOUR DESCRIPTION
An itinerary in the Archaeological Park of Herculaneum where archaeological excavations, started in 1738, have rediscovered the remains of a city whose life was abruptly interrupted by the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.
In the ancient Herculaneum buried under about 20 meters of lava, hot ash and volcanic mud, elements of furniture, everyday objects and food have been preserved in an extraordinary way. The largest part of the archaeological park is made up of private homes: on the paved streets, between the cardines and decumani of the urban layout of Herculaneum, there are beautiful domus decorated with frescoes and mosaics, where doors and wooden furniture are still preserved. There were also many shops: the 'pistrinum' (bakery), the 'caupona' (tavern); the shop of the 'gemmarius' where precious gemstone jewelry was made or the 'thermopolium' where street food was bought.
With the exception of the thermal baths and the gym, most of the public buildings of ancient Herculaneum are still buried under the ground, including the entire area of the Forum with sacred and civil buildings.
The visit ends at the ancient beach where under stone arches the skeletons of over three hundred people were found who on the night of the eruption had abandoned their homes trying in vain to escape to the sea.
