TOUR DESCRIPTION
Castel del Monte is a symbol of Puglia and has been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites since 1996.
Castel del Monte is located on an isolated hill (540 meters above sea level) a few kilometers from Andria and stands out clearly in the landscape of the Murge for its characteristic octagonal plan that makes it similar to a crown. The number eight is repeated consistently in what is considered a masterpiece of medieval architecture: eight octagonal towers located at the corners of the building and an internal octagonal courtyard on which eight rooms for each floor face. Its shape and function have always been the subject of study and a key argument of our guided tour.
The building, dating back to the first half of the 13th century, was wanted by Emperor Frederick II of Swabia and represents the synthesis of the refined engineering, mathematical, geometric, philosophical, and astronomical knowledge of its founder.
The guided tour starts from the outside to describe the perfection of its forms and then continues in the courtyard, in the 16 rooms, and in the towers with spiral staircases that ensure the connection between the two floors. The entire building is characterized by the contrast derived from the use of coral breccia, limestone, and polychrome marbles.
