TOUR DESCRIPTION
A route that crosses the historic center of Lecce to tell its history, art and traditions.
The city is famous for the baroque architecture of churches and palaces, which combined with the warm color of the Lecce stone, give it an elegant and golden appearance. Unmissable stops on a tour of the 'Baroque Capital' are Piazza del Duomo and the Basilica of Santa Croce, which have always amazed visitors to Lecce with their decorative features similar to stone lace.
Alongside the magnificent Lecce baroque of the altars and balconies, there are also masterpieces of papier-mâché statuary, a typical craft of the city that uses humble materials such as straw, paper, glue, and plaster. Visiting the workshops of the papier-mâché masters means discovering the secrets of an art that is passed down from generation to generation. In the background, the monuments of the oldest city: the imposing Castello di Carlo V, built on the edge of the fortified city incorporating the previous fortress dating back to the Norman era, and the buildings for shows of the Roman-era city: the Amphitheater in Piazza Sant'Oronzo and the Roman Theater, hidden among the alleys of the center.
