A tour to discover the magnificent "Villa A" of Oplontis, a magnificent example of a Roman aristocratic villa in the modern city of Torre Annunziata.
The building, once the probable residence of Poppea Sabina, the second wife of Emperor Nero, is a luxurious architectural complex built around the middle of the 1st century BC; expanded during the imperial era, it was under restoration at the time of the eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.
Visiting the so-called Villa of Poppea is a unique opportunity to admire authentic art treasures and Roman architecture. The villa is known for its magnificent wall frescoes and floor mosaics, in excellent condition, the thermal baths with the 'calidarium' and the 'tepidarium', and the triclinium, the dining room, whose walls are adorned with unique pictorial images showing baskets of figs, pomegranates and typical sweets of the time.
The monumental suburban villa also housed lush gardens and a large pool of 61 meters in length surrounded by colonnades, porticos and 'hospitalia', the guest rooms.
Along with the ancient cities of Pompeii and Herculaneum, the buildings of ancient Oplontis, including the 'Villa B', owned by Lucius Crassius Tertius, not yet visitable, have been included in the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
